A late evening at the TWS photo studio with Rice & Zimmerman

by Chris Wellhausen on Nov.13, 2009, under Uncategorized

Last night Travis Rice and photographer Tim Zimmerman stopped by the TWS office after hours to work in our photo studio.

photo

A little iPhone snapshot of Rice & Zimmerman setting up product shots.

Travis Rice is teaming up with artists & photographers such as Mike Parillo, Tim Zimmerman, Bryan Iguchi, Jamie Lynn, and Australian surf photographer Trent Mitchell to offer fine art and photography prints complete with framing options.

They spent a few hours in our photo studio shooting product shots of the frames…we didn’t get out until just before midnight. No worries though, it was a great opportunity to catch up with both Zimmerman and Rice…the two have a lot of great ideas for the upcoming season. Keep an out for Travis’s art collaborative called, “Asymbol.”

Today, those boys are off to Mammoth Mtn. for a collaborative art project in honor of Jeff Anderson & Mammoth’s official opening day. Click here to check out more about it: I AM SNOWBOARDING

The Art of Photography Show

by Chris Wellhausen on Aug.31, 2009, under Uncategorized

Producer of The Art of Photography’s Show, Steven Churchill (m), with the show’s juror Charlotte Cotton(r)

Last weekend The Art of Photography Show happened here in the Gaslamp District of downtown San Diego. What an evening of excitement. The opening reception was packed shoulder to shoulder of the two story Lyceum Theatre with an audience curious to view each of the brilliant looking photographs. The types of images ranged all the over the board; fine art to commercial work, unmanipulated to manipulated imagery. It was a visually stimulating evening to say the least.

Before these images were selected for the photo exhibition / contest, 16,000 entries from 57 countries needed to be edited down to the core of 111 selected photos. Talk about a serious edit session for the show’s juror, Charlotte Cotton! Ms. Cotton is Curator and Department Head of Photographs at Los Angeles County Museum of Art. She’s a very educated person who’s word and opinion about photography as contemporary art is highly valued amongst the gallery scene.

Earlier this summer, Joel Muzzey emailed me about this show and encouraged me to submit my photography. I am quite glad I followed up on his suggestion. On June 20th I found out that one of the photos I entered was selected to be part of the show! This would be the first show/contest I’ve entered any of my photographs in. My intentions to submit imagery was not so much about being involved in a contest, but to begin an experience in sharing framed art and the feedback that comes with it.

Moonbow Over Yosemite Falls, Yosemite National Park, California.

I made this photo during the full moon in the first week of May 2009. This moonbow occurs very rarely; it depends on the amount of the water falling from Yosemite Falls and especially because of the angle of the moon at this time of the year.

Volcom’s Stone Your TV with Gigi Ruf

by Chris Wellhausen on Mar.18, 2009, under Uncategorized

Peep these Volcom “Stone Your TV” episodes…killer perspective from Gigi Ruf.

Presenting the newest Original Programming show on StoneYour.tv:

Volcamera switches things around a little bit; we put the

camera in the hands of our team riders. This gives the viewer a loosely

edited story straight from the mind of our team riders doing what they do.

For the first episodes, we sent a camera to Gigi Rüf. Gigi spent two days

shredding the Italian Alps under the famous Matterhorn. This is Gigi?s view

while filming for Absinthe?s new snowboard film.

Time to Catch Up…

by Chris Wellhausen on Mar.17, 2009, under Uncategorized

Got to catch that plane to a new destination.

I must be the first to admit that it’s been way too too long since I have taken the time to update my blog. I am busy making everything else happen and this blog has not been on the center of my radar.

Since my last post our crew wrapped up the April issue, with the John Jackson sunset cover photographed by Ian Ruhter, and we’ve been on a constant search for the best places to cover the shred scene. My season really started off at the X Games, Riders Poll, and The Mt. Baker Banked Slalom. A few other great adventures have also occurred, but you’ll have to wait til we start back into production of the new TWS issues to get the full story.

We were ready to party with Elvis in Vegas for the SIA tradeshow and the Rider’s Poll.

The South West has a unique art culture and supports it’s Native American history.

Fueled for long days in the backcountry by CLIF bar products. All natural son!

It’s not easy packing for multiple days in the backcountry; Camera gear, backcountry safety gear, food, water = 65lbs!!! That’s the essentials. If your shocked by the weight on my back, wait til you hear about this splitboarding adventure we went on. The list of hard numbers is wild.

From the desk of the TW SNOWboarding Photo Dept.

by Chris Wellhausen on Sep.19, 2008, under Uncategorized

Welcome to the TW SNOWboarding Photo Department. This time of the year is always exciting. Fall officially starts at the end of the month, ASR has brought us several movie premieres & several visitors, and we’ve been shipping new issues of the mag on the regular. All meaning that we are that much closer to welcoming a new shred season.

Recently, Nick Hamilton and I have dusted off and fired up the ole’ light table to peep & select a couple timeless slides from snowboarding’s history.

While we spend a lot of time editing photos & organizing them for upcoming features, its real cool to mix up our days work with visiting photographers. The details they share are amazing, funny, and add much more character to images. It’s nice to hear the story behind the photos, rather than just call them super dope and send them to production.

Over the summer some of the contributing photographers that have stop by to say hello and share insight into their season have been, L-R, Mike Yoshida, Dean Blotto Gray, and Joel Fraser.

Check out almost any issue of TWS and they’ll feature some of these photographers’ best photos.

It was awesome to finally see the snowboard movies we’ve all been anticipating; These Days, That’s It That’s All, Down With People, Double Decade, etc., etc.. The Transworld staff knew that we were the lucky ones to see this many movies within the four or five nights of ASR (Action Sports Retail tradeshow) here in our own hometown of San Diego. With that in mind, last week we announced a TWS online premiere of These Days (that happened on Monday) to give you shreds a complete taste of the movie. One time, that was it. Now to see These Days you ‘ll have to go online or go to your favorite shop to buy a fresh copy and watch it everyday!

Liam Gallagher & Joe Carlino welcomed 6500 viewers that logged on to TWSNOW.com, showed the movie, and when it finished they even stayed around to answer questions that kids posted on the comment boards.

With all the movie premiers, super dope photos, & industry visits it can be a challenge staying focused at our desks…but the visits don’t happen everyday, so when they do stop by we’re all stoked to catch up.

This week John Cavan, Rome TM & Cinematographer also came through and entertained us with an exclusive office viewing of ROME’s No Correct Way.  All in the photo, foreground to background & left to right: TWS Associate Editor Ben Gavelda, TWS Associate Art Director John Antoski, TWS Videography Joe Carlino, John Cavan, Mathieu Crepel, Rossi TM Matthieu Giraud, Xavier De La Rue, and TWS Senior Editor Joel Muzzey.

Todd Richards: Gumball 3000 pitstop

by Chris Wellhausen on Aug.20, 2008, under Uncategorized

The other morning on the way to the TW offices, I stopped at a local coffee shop and ran into Todd Richards.

Todd made a overnight pitstop at home from the Gumball 3000 rally. He had finished with the Nor Cal leg of the trip and was headed to Las Vegas after finishing his breakfast.

Check out this sweet ride…wonder how fast it goes…

Antoski’s So Cal Artshow Debut

by Chris Wellhausen on Aug.12, 2008, under Uncategorized

I know we have a very talented Art Department here at TWS, but I am extra proud to share with you an inspirational piece of art that our Associate Art Director, John Antoski, presented Friday night at San Diego downtown gallery named “Subtext.”

It was cool evening to venture to San Diego’s Little Italy…this area of SD hosts many art events throughout the year.

Once Ben, J2, & I arrived we cruised the area for a little bite to eat. We ran into Koop (TW Snow Art Director) and he was showed us his busted up Pentax point & shoot…time for another party camera kid.

After arriving at the Subtext gallery, we gathered around Antoski to hear about his creation.

Antoski calls this “Living Not Breathing.” I noticed several visual references to his surroundings…both from his native homeland of Canada & to his new environment of the beach scene. Wild for sure! Antoski Dali!

In addition to the pen & ink designs, these “munnies” we in abundance…trippy lil’ toy art figures

This one reminded me of Halloween costume.

This maybe one of the most successful “munnies.” As it is produced for the consumer with a speaker that allows I-pod plug ins. I was down for one…but a little large for my office desk.

Sharp Shooters

by Chris Wellhausen on Aug.12, 2008, under Uncategorized

When I think of the phrase “Sharp Shooters,” I think of those dudes on top of the mountain resorts with bright jackets asking to take your picture in order to sell it to you later in the day down at the lodge. Friday’s lunch break was a different kind of sharp shooters for Associate Editor Ben Gavelda & Senior Editor Joel Muzzey.

Straight to the heart…that’s one mean mug son!

Our TW interns have been a super big help this summer…not to mention a lot of fun to have around.

Shannon Quirk is our Photo Intern from UCLA and she been assisting us with lots of photo projects…much more than just getting us lunch with Nick’s credit card.

John Poulin, better known as J2, is our Edit Intern from UVM. He’s been responsible for several “Caught Ups” & video teaser posts to the new TW site.
